Zen Ken

Shiitake 2

Deep in the heart of the newly refurbished downtown Wild Rice Super Wholefoods store, self professed macrobiotic hip chick, Shiitake Jones was carefully inspecting a batch of new season biodynamic short grain brown rice in the bulk foods section. It seemed to be of reasonable quality so she filled several brown paper bags with it, collected her chickpeas, adzuki beans and barley and headed off in search of some rare quality wildcrafted kuzu collected under the full moon by Mongolian peasants in the middle of winter. It would be such a relief to cross that off her shopping list.

Self Defence

Serious health warning: Incorporating these suggestions into your
life may allow you to remain fit, healthy and sniffle-free all winter
long.

With the brisk chill of the colder months descending upon us,
thoughts of winter sniffles can have many of us reaching for a box of
tissues before you can even say “aaaaachooo…!!!” Although common as a
cold, respiratory infections are nothing to sneeze at. With increasing
numbers of deaths from antibiotic resistant pneumonia, bacterial
diseases and worldwide infectious epidemics, perhaps it is time to
evaluate our current treatment of contagious diseases, while rethinking
the current paradigm of our relationship with pathogens. Although the
thought of a cold being “caught” has been prevalent in our culture
since Louis Pasteur promulgated the germ theory of infection,
instigating the scientific struggle to win the war with microbes, more
advanced understandings of the interplay between toxin and terrain are
emerging. Pasteur, who recanted this theory on his deathbed declaring,
“the toxin is nothing, the terrain is everything!” may have found this
emerging wholistic approach empowering. Continue Reading »

The Low Carb Lowdown

“To carb or not to carb?” This seems to be the question on everybody’s lips (or should that be hips?) these days. Disillusioned with the ineffective low fat, high carbohydrate diets that boomed during the aerobic crazed 1980’s and 90’s, and facing epidemics of obesity, maturity-onset diabetes and cardiovascular disease, more and more people are forgoing fat-free fare and turning to the high fat and protein food they used to shun. CARE FOR YOUR KIDNEYS

Although wintertime is the season traditionally associated with the
kidneys, it is easy for these hardworking organs to become overstressed
by the extremes of summer living. Excess fluid intake in response to
food choices that make us excessively thirsty and overexposure to the
elements, an overabundance of cooling foods and drinks and lack of
adequate rest can all be taxing to the vital energy of these organs.
Give them a treat with this re-balancing home remedy and notice how you
feel. Continue Reading »

The Amazing Gingko

For Extra Mental Get Up and Go,

Remember To Take The Amazing Gingko!

One aspect of aging that many people fear is the prospect of memory
loss. Memory defines who we are, helping us find our place in the
world. Perhaps this is why gingko biloba, which has become known as the
memory herb, with a reputation for offsetting the common effects of
aging, has become one of the most consumed herbs in the world and the
fastest growing in terms of consumer demand.

Fat Chance - Reflections on oil consumption

Warning: this article is best enjoyed with a side serve of grated
daikon, pickled ginger and wasabi. Please drain on absorbent kitchen
towel paper before reading.

Until the recent reintroduction of unrefined coconut oil on the
wholefoods scene, and the attempt to re-educate a public indoctrinated
by the margarine and refined oils industry of its supposed deleterious
effects, all that stood between artery obstructing, cell destroying
trans fats and a deep fryer was butter. Hardly a choice for most
macrobiotically oriented, whole food loving individuals. Continue Reading »
